General Mills No. 1 in leadership development ranking

Leadership Excellence magazine places General Mills at the top of its annual ranking for second consecutive year

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Leadership Excellence announced this week that General Mills tops the magazine’s annual “Best in Leadership Development” list for the second consecutive year.

“We’re thrilled to receive this endorsement of our commitment to developing the best leaders,” said Kevin Wilde, vice president and chief learning officer for General Mills. “We admire and learn from our peers on this list and receiving the top ranking again this year is an honor.”

General Mills offers career-long development opportunities for employees at each stage of their careers, including mentoring, access to leadership experts and speakers, training at the General Mills Institute, tuition reimbursement, and individual development planning.

“Great talent wants to grow,” said Wilde. “We believe that the best companies win with talented, committed employees who grow and develop to achieve their highest potential, making significant contributions to the business.”

The company cites its leadership programs as one of the reasons why many talented employees spend their entire careers with the company. In fact, more than 85 percent of the company’s current officers were developed and promoted into the role from within the company.

Leadership Excellence ranks companies’ leadership development programs according to the following criteria: vision and mission; design, content and curriculum; involvement and participation; measurement and accountability; presenters, presentation and delivery; take-home value; and outreach.

General Mills topped Leadership Excellence’s 2012 Best in Leadership Development ranking in the “large organizations” category, which is made up of more than 250 companies.

More information on the ranking is available in the October issue of Leadership Excellence.

The recognition from Leadership Excellence comes on the heels of other recent accolades for General Mills' leadership development program, including a first place ranking in Chief Learning Officer's 2012 Learning Elite awards and second place ranking on Fortune's Global Top Companies for Leaders list.
